To make your stay as flexible as possible and to be able to easily reach some of the sights outside the city, a rental car is a good option. The historic old town

The historic old town is a must-see. Bamberg's old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993 and is divided into three areas. The 'Franconian Rome', also known as Bergstadt (hill town), is built on seven hills. These hills are home to Bamberg Cathedral and St. Michael's Monastery, for example. Another part of the old town is known as the island town. Here the Altes Rathaus invites you to visit. The third part of the old town is referred to as the GÀrtnerstadt (gardeners' district) and is home to the GÀrtner- und HÀckermuseum (Gardeners' and Winegrowers' Museum). Afterwards, make sure that you take a lengthy stroll through the city.

Bamberg Cathedral

The foundation stone was laid by Emperor Henry II in 1004. The Romanesque-style cathedral has always been one of Bamberg's main attractions. As such, Bamberg Cathedral attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world to the city every year. In addition to the Bamberg Horseman and the once canonised imperial couple of the Holy Roman Empire, Pope Clement II also rests there. He is the only pope buried north of the Alps.

Altenburg Castle

Altenburg Castle sits enthroned on the highest of Bamberg's mountains. The mediaeval hilltop castle was first mentioned in 1109 and is now a landmark of the city of Bamberg. As Altenburg Castle is located just outside the city, we recommend that you rent a car. It takes just 15–20 minutes by car from the centre of Bamberg. Once you arrive at the castle, head up to the tower, which offers a breathtaking view over Bamberg and its surroundings.
